Those of us who are avid gardeners and living in the Northern Hemisphere can't wait for the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Then the days will begin to lengthen and we can look forward to the gardening season once again. Whoo-hoo! This year the solstice occurs on December 22nd, and to celebrate I'm posting a photo-a-day countdown with some of my favorite photographs of 2011. Enjoy!

Jocelyn, I'm enjoying your solstice countdown so far. I'm not familiar with Pulsatilla vulgaris but it looks so lovely in this photo. I'll have to google it and see what the flowers look like.
I also enjoy your solstice countdown. It makes this time of the year passing faster. Thank you for doing it and great pictures.

Debbie, Pulsatilla is known as Pasque Flower and is a member of the Ranunculaceae family. The genus is native to both northern Europe and North America. P. patens is native to Colorado in open forests and sagebrush,up to timberline.
