Friday Afternoon Garden Club

Cucurbita pepo

It’s FAC time in The Art Garden! Grab your favorite beverage and pull up a chair. You didn’t really want to work this afternoon anyway, did you? Leave a comment to join the garden party.

Today’s topic:

Do you buy seeds or plants from catalogs or on-line vendors? What kinds of plants? Who are your favorite suppliers? What is the biggest plant that you’ve ever received in the mail (UPS, Fed Ex, etc.)?

Jocelyn,

I'm relatively new to buying and growing seeds and bought my first batch last spring from Renee's Garden, an on-line vendor. My attention span is a bit short and I definitely suffer from 'out of sight out of mind' syndrome so I opted for seeds I could start right outside. I had a lot of luck and have already purchased more for this year.

The largest plant I ever bought through the mail was a 4' golden chain tree from White Flower Farms. That was over 10 years ago and the tree is still growing strong, even after having been moved a few times around the garden. I prefer to nuy locally when possible but will go the mail order route when I just have to have a plant I can't find anywhere else.

I have had good experiences with Renee's Garden and White Flower Farms also. It's been many, many years since I ordered plants or seeds through the mail; the Denver area has a wonderful array of suppliers that I always get to shop locally. A favorite seed supplier is Botanical Interests, based in Broomfield, CO.

I love your story about the golden chain tree! You must have beautiful soil AND a very green thumb to keep it going after several rounds of transplanting!

Thanks for visiting!

I have bought anything and everything I could not obtain locally in Arkansas. Let me qualify what was available in Arkansas: next to nothing.

There is a blog I wrote with notes about my experiences with mail-order sources http://bit.ly/a6jCrK

Now, having just moved to Colorado in November, I will be learning a whole new zone and looking for new plant choices!

Garden Chick, "looking for new plant choices" is my kind of fun!
