Friday Afternoon Garden Club

It’s FAC time in The Art Garden! Grab your favorite beverage and pull up a chair. You didn’t really want to work this afternoon anyway, did you? Leave a comment to join the garden party.

Today’s topic:

Did you plant any bulbs last fall? What kind? Do you know where they are ;-) ?

Did I plant any bulbs? Hyacinths, daffodils and lilies. Click on my name to see some of them, except for the lilies, which are still hiding underground.

This has been a wonderful spring for bulbs, with more to bloom.

No, I planted them in January after they went half price. I may have suffered cold brain damage when I planted them, because I can't remember where they are, but it is all part of the surprise of spring.

Nell Jean, your daffodil plantings are lovely- very natural looking. Lucky you to have such a bright welcome for the first of spring! We are several weeks behind you; the tips of my early tulips are just now peeking through the soil...

Les, your comment made me laugh and also brought back fond memories of my grandmother, Josephine. She loved to buy bulbs via catalogs during the summer, but by the time they arrived for planting in the fall she would be pooped out from months of tending her gardens and endless rounds of canning. She sheepishly admitted to going out to the gardens in January with kettles of boiling water to soften the frozen ground and plant her beloved bulbs. I doubt if her "trick" worked very often, but it made her feel a bit less guilty about wasting the opportunity (and money!) for some fresh spring flowers.

Yep - we have vague memories of some of our "surprises" coming up, too. We've been discussing them for a couple weeks now and it goes like this...."Hmm,did we plant some bulbs here?"...."Hmm,I don't remember." "Hmm, what do you think we planted?"..."Hmm, well didn't we talk about tulips maybe?...." So I agree with you all. Spring is magical as things come up that you don't remember but are excited about nonetheless!!
