Friday Afternoon Garden Club

Begonia ssp

It’s FAC time in The Art Garden! Grab your favorite beverage and pull up a chair. You didn’t really want to work this afternoon anyway, did you? Leave a comment to join the garden party.

Today’s topic:

Do you focus on indoor gardening during the winter months? What plants are in your home right now? Is important to you that they flower, or is beautiful foliage or edibility your goal?

I am keeping 4 pots of geraniums in the window to go back out on the patio, I just wanted them to live and give me some cuttings but they are all in bloom now. Three african violets continue to thrive over ten years. We had gotten away from very many plants inside but it is good to have more in the winter. The one poinsettia continues to be beautiful.

Oh, I envy you your flowering geraniums! My grandmother always had them in all of her sunny windows and they are so cheery. We are down to very few houseplants as well. One Phalaenopsis orchid that blooms faithfully every summer is the showiest of the bunch. Our most recent purchase is a Zamia Zamiafolia (say that fast 5 times!). It is supposed to tolerate low light conditions and general neglect. Perfect!

My indoor plants are mostly cacti and succulents, including several types of agaves and aloes, lots of cacti that I don't know the names of offhand, and a few other things. I only overwinter my plectacantus (sp?). I start lots of seeds in February, and then my sunroom becomes an indoor greenhouse, even the smell of the soil is awesome. Kathy

I love cacti and succulents but, alas, just don't have the interior light to support them. Lucky you!

There is a breezeway at my home which receives light all day long since the walls making up both of it's sides are all windows. It is consistently warm in there and contains a small heater for the days when it is not.

Being so weary of the constant brown/gray of winter, when I visited my local nursery to pick up an orchid pot, I walked away with a variety of herbs and pots to make up an herb garden in the breezeway. I am potting them up today and am looking forward to their fragrance and the bit o' green that will welcome me each time I enter my home.

I already feel refreshed and brand new!

I love your idea of bringing the fresh/complex fragrances of herbs into the winter home. Brilliant!
